Investors are used to hearing about lithium battery technologies for use in automobiles, but Balqon Corporation (OTCBB: BLQN) is taking them from the street to the water. On Friday, the Harbor City, California-based developer of electric vehicles, drive systems and lithium battery storage systems said that it has delivered and installed its HIQAP high energy storage and battery system into Island Pilot Yacht, powered by DSE Hybrid solar electric drive.
DSE Hybrid is a Key Largo, Florida-based maker of solar power electric drive systems for marine applications. The company also provides eco cruising tours in 12-meter-long, solar-powered yachts in south Florida. They are the first yachts of their type in the U.S.
The Balqon system includes lithium batteries, battery management and control system and charger, making it a true “plug-and-play” battery solution and viable replacement for traditional lead acid batteries.
The yacht and its new lithium battery system is on display at Trawlerfest, a boat show being held yesterday through February 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“We have been seeking high energy density battery solution that was economical and provided longer run time with higher transfer efficiency,” commented Rueben Trane, Executive Director of Island Pilot, on the Balqon product meeting their need.
“Our proprietary 1000 ahr capacity single cell battery design enables our customers to upgrade from lead acid batteries to higher transfer efficiency lithium solutions with minimum effort,” said Balwinder Samra, CEO of Balqon Corporation.
Balqon now has their technology on the water and it also recently released a complete line of next generation electric vehicle motor controllers, named ZEVQON™, designed for emerging zero emission commercial truck and bus markets. The new controllers include a full line of AC inverters for use in electric vehicles from small utility vehicles to commercial grade on-road trucks.
Shares of Balqon have been rising so far in 2013, moving from lows of 11 cents to near 30 cents. With the morning news, shares rose to 10-week highs of 33 cents before giving back some of the gains to 29 cents with two hours left in the trading day. Shares have traded as high as 60 cents in the past 52 weeks.
