Applied DNA Sciences Partners with University of Albany

Applied DNA Sciences (APDN)

DNA security solutions provider Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (OTCBB:APDN) reported that it has partnered with the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany (New York) to “enable nanotechnology-driven innovations that would play a critical role in preventing the counterfeiting of computer chips — a collaboration in the groundbreaking area of “nanosecurity” that initially targets the $20 billion defense industry chip market and has the potential to impact nanoelectronics and aerospace markets well in excess of $300 billion.”

UAlbany CNSE is to the “nano” world what Harvard’s Dana-Farber is to cancer research.  It is the first college in the world dedicated to education, research, development and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience and nanoeconomics.  Operating throughout a 800,000 square-foot facility, the college possesses more than $14 billion in high-tech investments and is the world’s most advanced university-driven research enterprise providing over 300 corporate partners with access to an unmatched ecosystem for leading-edge R&D and commercialization of nanoelectronics and nanotechnology innovations.

More than 2,600 scientists, researchers, engineers, students and faculty work at UAlbany CNSE, from companies including IBM, Intel, GlobalFoundries, SEMATECH, Samsung, TSMC, Toshiba, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, ASML and Novellus Systems.

The collaboration will work on accelerating the development of Applied DNA Sciences’ SigNature DNA® product, including integration of new technologies to ensure the security of computer chips and supply chains, an ever-growing target of criminals in the counterfeiting space.   The company is confident of results and a near-term deployment, according to APDN President and CEO Dr. James A. Hayward.

Through the use of botanical DNA to create “tags” to mark products in a unique way, the APDN system marks computer chips with DNA codes that cannot be copied or replicated, which can then be used to authenticate the originality of chips anywhere along the supply chain.

The new partnership was struck at an ideal time with the recent enactment of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act. This law will require that military suppliers and government agencies create and implement counterfeit detection and avoidance systems, among many other strict anti-counterfeiting provisions to help abate the influx of counterfeit parts entering the defense supply system.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, commented,

It is critical that nanotechnology research and development is done right here in the U.S.   The partnership between the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and Applied DNA Sciences on Long Island will help keep our country competitive and combat nanochip counterfeiting.
